The Marine Conservation Society

The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) is the UK charity dedicated to caring for our seas, shores and wildlife. MCS campaigns for clean seas and beaches, sustainable fisheries, and protection for all marine life.

MCS Beachwatch is an annual UK-wide beach litter survey and clean up, organised by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) since 1993.  MCS Beachwatch takes place on the third weekend in September every year, and represents the UK’s contribution to the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC), which takes place in over 80 countries worldwide. The Marine Conservation Society mobilise thousands of volunteers, surveying litter on hundreds of beaches throughout the UK. The results from MCS Beachwatch are published annually in a MCS Beachwatch Report, available to the public and vital in the MCS campaign to stem the litterbugs at source.

MCS Beachwatch is the flagship event of the Adopt-a-Beach project - which is a scheme whereby local groups clean and monitor beaches up to four times a year.  By adopting their local beach and conducting seasonal litter surveys, communities around the UK are: showing their commitment to a healthy coastal environment; collecting useful beach litter records to lobby for proper beach management at a local level and, in forwarding that data to MCS, helping us tackle litter at a UK level.
